Kids' Letters to Harry Potter: An Unauthorized Collection

Harry at his best
The stories of enjoyment and excitment people have written about really struck my fancy. When the Harry Potter series first came out i thought 'Its just another kids book' but when my class was forced to read the first book Harry Potter and the philosephers stone i just had to get the rest of the series. I rate this book 100 out of 100.

a whole differnet world
harry potter has enchanted millions of readers from around the world and pulled the the children away from their television and showed them that reading is fun. read this if you want to see how far a child's imagination can carry him.

It's Great
It's great that people are finally listening to the kids point of views. Its the kids who made this series popular in the first place and then it spread to the parents and to other adults. Without these loyal fans, this series would not have been so popular and its about time that they get some credit for it.

My wife can't even cook toast. She is the pits. This book is essential to surviving. She really can't cook!! I started eating the book and then realized that there were some pretty good recipes inside. Hoping for an updated book with a recipe for Spaghetti & Ketchup!! Bic

The 1st Cookbook you'll want to read from cover to cover!
The first time I picked up this book, I actually wanted to read it from cover to cover - just to see what was coming next! Not only will the "Tips" keep you laughing, the authors really know what they're talking about. There are some tips that my mother did not even know about!

Guaranteed to make you laugh!
This book is alot of fun. John and Chris have captured the essence of the male hunter/gatherer.

The Potter's Dictionary of Materials and Techniques
Published in Hardcover by University of Pennsylvania Press (June, 1997)
Authors: Frank Hamer and Janet Hamer
Average review score:

Indispensable reference, must-have for serious potter
This is an indispensable reference for anyone involved in the potter's and ceramic arts. More an encyclopedia than a dictionary, the depth and detail of coverage is outstanding.

From the artistic to the highly technical, everything is here. Materials & processes as well as chemical compositions and practical formulae are accompanied by black & white photos and excellent diagrams.

A wealth of information is provided in an appendix of 42 tables, a bibliography, a list of suppliers and personal recipes from a number of artists. Historical styles and techniques are included as well.

Two sections of color plates include many varied and beautiful finished pieces with technical details and references to appropriate dictionary entries. This is definitely a classic in its field.

Single best hands-on resource for clay working.
This is the single best hands-on resource for clay working that I have found in over 20 years of clayworking, studying and teaching. It is a dictionary BUT it is cross-referenced and illustrated with many well-covered, interlocking topics. There are seven full pages on cracking alone with all the various factors described so one can diagnose and correct problems in the shortest possible time.

Perhaps the best ceramics reference book you will find.
I have depended upon this book for years as a student and now as a professor of ceramics. Topics are listed alphabetically (as in a dictionary or encyclopedia) and provide information ranging from the definition of common and obscure potter's terminology, to thorough explanations of the physical and chemical properties of clay and various related materials. This is a resource that will keep providing information as you progress in your understanding of the medium.

The Potter's Professional Handbook
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (February, 1999)
Author: Steven Branfman
Average review score:

For the serious hobbiest and the professional potter
This is the book I have been looking for. I'm building a clay studio and wanted advice and tips on how to set it up. This is the only book I've found that gives really in-depth information on these topics. He also covers other topics you would want to know if you're going to be a professional potter.

Not only does he share some of his own horror stories (so you won't repeat them yourself!), but he also includes insets of the stories of other pro potters and their studios. Very helpful. He covers studio needs, selection, etc.; working with suppliers, vendors, contractors; equipment selection; and business practices, marketing and self-promotion (the hardest part of the business for me - and I think for most artists!). He also talks a bit about teaching and it's effect on your work (pro and con). The subtitle of the book says it all: "The complete guide to defining, identifying, and establishing yourself in the craft community".

This book is a must have for any professional potter and will be found very helpful even to hobbiests.

A thorough guide to getting started in the pottery business!
This book is so comprehensive and has answered so many of my initial questions regarding the start of a pottery studio and business. Steve writes in a language the layman and advance potter can both understand. The chapters are coherently laid out with the pertinent topics such as vendors, supplies, electrical needs, studio set-up, equipment making and purchasing, space needs, floor plans; the list goes on and on for the whole book. The back of the book has many vendors, suppliers and web links for reference. Although the web pages of many have changed, it is a great start on connecting with the pottery world. I highly recommend this book.

A path well directed
It is comforting to know that there is a book out there that is well written and primarily intended for people like me, who earn a living from clay. Naturally, most of us have already knocked our heads and come up with some soluations - discussed by Steve, but the confirmation of having made "right" decisions, etc., takes a load off and builds confidence. Had I been able to read a text like this six years ago, I would have had less bruises to my head and my ego! His other book, Raku: A Practical Approach is also a treasure which I notice is not listed here on Amazon - uhhmmmmm! Would be nice to have that as an Amazon selection.

The Potter's Touch

He Was a Great Man
Dr. Sam Sasser, the Author of The Potter's Touch, was a great man. He often came to our church to preach the word before he passed on to be with the Lord. He was a good husband, a very good father, and we will always remember him. I recomend you read this book.

A brilliant, inspiring and challenging book
This book brings you to a place of wanting to surrender all to God, allowing His touch to mold and make you the vessel He desire you to be.

Potter's Touch is a Classic
'The Potter's Touch' by Dr. Sam Sasser is a devotional classic. Dr. Sasser talks with frankness but gentleness about the path from Christian belief to practical ministry as a person is lovingly moulded by the Master's hand. Sharing from his experience as a missionary for over 20 years in the Marshall Islands, Dr. Sasser shares with sensitivity and pratical insight. I was privileged to meet Dr. Sasser before he passed away in 1996. He was in incredible man. This book has had a profound influence upon my life.

FUN AT THE BEACH
We bought this book at the beach and could not believe how much more fun the beach was. We learned things that were new and VERY interesting about the ocean and the life that surrounds it. We take this book to the pool and also do experiments. This book is great to teach children easy science theories with water and in places where children play in water. We use it at home and on vacation. Love it!

A MUST FOR THE BEACH
When we pack for the beach, this book is the first thing we put in the suitcases. Our children have used this book for two summers and they never tire of it. In fact, my husband and I LOVE the b ook as well. We have learned so much about the beach. It is a great book for at home experiments with water as well, but we save it for the beach!

Science in Seconds at the Beach
I found this book at the beach when I took my grandson. We had so much fun with it. There are lots of different activities that he had fun doing. It is packed with projects to entertain him and anyone else who might just get bored digging in the sand. I was surprised that there are so many activities that could be adapted at home. He is using this book all of the time. Plenty of fun and learning going on. This book is just great! Thanks!

New uses for old toys
My kids got tired of their toys. i got tired of buying them new ones. So I found this book and discovered through it....new uses for the toys they already had. It was like buying all new toys. I cannot recommend this book enough if you don't want to go out and buy new toys. And, it teaches kids the science behind the toys, which is an added benefit.

This is Fun +++++
I bought this book at a bookstore and liked the content. It is a very easy to use book to use with children. I have used it with my kindergarten kids and my kids who are older at home. There are so many good ideas and concepts to learn that even we teachers can learn from it! I like the book very much...in fact so much that I am going toget this author's other books through Amazon!

Science in Seconds with Toys
My kids got tired of their toys. We do not have the money to buy new ones, so my eye caught this book. I LOVE IT!!!. The book gives a whole new adventure to our kids toys. They not only learned some important science concepts with them...they now look at all of their toys and try to think of other ways to use them. This book saved me money and taught my children some important academics! I highly recommend!

Shrinking Violet

Shrinking Violet - More than just a wonderful story
A rare and delightful book about social anxiety disorder in childhood. Best aptly describes Violet's symptoms in an accurate and endearing way and communicates a basic truth of dealing with social anxiety - it gets better when you do the things you are afraid of. Beautifully illustrated and writen in an endearing style, children love the book and learn as they are giggling. As a psychologist, I've used this book in therapy with several children. It is a wonderful vehicle for helping them to understand and overcome their social and performance anxieties.

Who is the hidden actreas.
I think that this is a very interesting book. It shows how someone very shy and sometimes wants to just disappear gets over their fears. The main character is Violet. Violet always gets bullied around by Irwin who is always insulted her. One day Violet helped him out, to find out what happened read this book. I think that this is a very interesting book. Violet Saves the Day.....
For as long as Violet could remember, she didn't like to be watched. "I am allergic to attention." Being watched made her cheeks blush rhubarb red and when everyone stared, she itched and scratched and twirled her hair. Class bully, Irwin, made things even worse. He said she had fat knees, hairy arms and smelled liked deadly sewer gas and everyone stared. "I wish I could just shrink away," she thought. When her teacher, Mrs. Maxwell, announces that the class will put on a play about the solar system and everyone will have a part, poor Violet is terrified. But Mrs. Maxwell assures her that Lady Space is a mysterious voice, offstage, that is only heard and never seen. The class practices and works hard and Violet especially likes her part. During the performance, the play begins well, all the planets, stars and comets, asteroids, meteoroids and even the sun know their places and their lines. That is, except Irwin, and that's when Violet steps in and saves the day..... Cari Best and Giselle Potter have really captured the essence of the quiet, shy child and overt class bully in their charming picture book, Shrinking Violet. Ms Best's text is gentle and sympathetic and complemented by Ms Potter's expressive and detailed watercolor artwork and together they've written an empathetic and amusing story with a simple message that won't be lost on young readers. Perfect for kids 4-8, Shrinking Violet is a story told with great insight, humor and wisdom and youngsters will enjoy watching Violet "bloom" again and again, with each reading.
